The Gaze of the kavaluan examines an argument rooted in the conflict of values between chastity and lust. This production attempts to uncover and challenge the dualism of a person’s identity and body, an inevitable issue for indigenous people. The doctrine of Paiwan (排灣) and Rukai (魯凱) dictates that only virgins are allowed to wear lilies in their clothing. The Gaze of the kavaluan shines a spotlight on the contradictory values of chastity and lust. It draws attention to the sensual feelings of real life.
